Collective Body.

So for the last couple of months Ihave had a side project going on alongside all my uni work called ‘collective body’. It’s a project that involves creating a project with four other universities around the world.

Today we had the project resolution over a Skype conference call which was hilarious and decidedly fun as I have no deadlines to worry about at the moment. It lasted just over and hour and was between us in Farnham (UK), Leeds (UK), South Korea, Canada and India. We all spoke about our work in turn and gave feedback before letting Korea go to bed and Canada have their breakfast!

Afterwards we had a little chat about what we are going to be doing in regards to exhibiting the work. There’s been a bit of a mix up and so we are not sure exactly where our venue is for certain but it is going to happen somewhere regardless!

Above is a mock up of what one of my images will look like and a phone snap of the conference set - up. I’m going to print the image which was supplied by my partner in Leeds and then write over it before framing it and displaying it nice and small somewhere.

So after leaving Riflemaker’s I headed out towards Mayfair but was distracted temporarily by the pretty lights emanating from a shop front in Beak Street. It turns out this was a display set up by ‘Neon Man’ Chris Bracey titled ‘God’s own junkyard’ (which I find out has closed today, sorry!).

The shop itself was an Aladdin’s cave of electrical buzzing sculptures as well as more traditional neon light designs. Admittedly at first I wasn’t aware of the shop as being an exhibition of collectables as all the lights had price tags (more than my small change lifestyle can afford) but after reading up about some of the lights history I found it really quite interesting. Attached are some of the images I took whilst in the shop. I’ll finish this post in the morning…

…and I’m back. Many of the lights had been used in photo shoots for magazines and films. One example being Emma Summerton’s Vogue cover & spread featured on

Bracey’s own website. Initially I think neon lights were not something that I would have associated with ‘beauty’. They’re kind of an alien concept, I hardly see them and when I do it’s advertising nail extensions or fried chicken. Bracey’s collection changed that, neon lights can provide a pleasure by simply looking at their vibrant glow. Sure they can have ‘trashy’ connotations but what doesn’t? All these lights have been lovingly crafted and they display a fusion of design and craftsmanship that I think should be merited.

Unfortunately this shop is now closed but Bracey takes his lights on tour every year or so and so be sure to watch out for when they next hit London. Start saving now and you could have your very own piece of electro-art.

Last week I had the pleasure of popping into London for an artist friend’s private view party at The Brick Lane Gallery. On my way I decided to visit two shows I have been wanting to see for a while.

The first was the Veolia ‘Wildlife photographer of the year’ awards which showed the best entries in each of the categories listed. Examples of these being ‘Nature in Black & White’, ‘Botanical Realms’, ‘Urban Wildlife’, ‘Animal portraits’ as well as different versions of animal behaviour such as ‘Cold-Blooded Reptile’ & ‘Birds’. The event is being held in the Natural History Museum and, in my opinion, is a worth the entrance fee. Unfortunately the show has a no photography policy, which for once I abided by, but if i’m honest I was too busy taking down new names to further research to take any photographs of the show.

The show itself was a brilliant set up of the big names in the Wildlife photography genre and there were some truly stunning pictures which showed the best the natural world has to offer. It kept myself and my companion busy for over an hour and we came away having enjoyed the work very much. In particular we enjoyed the focus on certain photographer’s portfolios as well as the children and young adults section which showcased images that I would have been proud to have taken myself!

Following this we visited the ‘Riflemaker’ gallery which I have been wanting to visit for some time now. It is located in Beak Street, soho, and I have walked past it (and stopped to look in the window) many times without realising what it was. The current show is based on the work of Judy Chicago and featured sculptures as well as paintings/drawings that derive from feminist theory. I thoroughly enjoyed the show and the unique use of space in the gallery and recommend if you are in the area to drop by the show as it is worth seeing. The woman invigilating the gallery was also lovely, she allowed me to take photos of some of the work when I had previously been told by a friend the Riflemaker did not allow photography. So for that, thank you kind woman who I do not know!

I shall leave it there, but not to worry there will be more to come over the coming week!

I’m currently working on a new side project which will encourage me to begin writing about photography. My plan is to begin writing up articles around the areas that I am studying for my course as well as anything that I find intertesting. Hopefully it’ll be something new and interesting for the new year

Book Binding

Last Friday I was lucky enough to grab a space on the highly subscribed book binding workshop at uni. It’s something not directly related to photography but worth knowing in a little more detail if I wish to create a unique photobook in the future, whether it be for the course or for my a personal project. The session was led by a lovely Finnish lady named Riikka on behalf of her employer Sheperd’s Falkiners and was easily one of the best workshops I have had since starting university.

Beginning the class Riikka explained some of the basics of paper manufacture and how these were important to understand so that our books would not deteriorate too rapidly (or infact destroy themselves!). After this we began by individually folding each page and creating six gatherings consisting of five pages so that we could then sew them together to make the innards of the book.

Sewing the gatherings together with waxed linen thread (more durable than cotton!) I got to use some of my old Seamanship skills before gluing the bundle together and leaving to dry whilst I ran home to grab some lunch! Once dry we attached the spine and the headband which adds strength but historically has importance in colour. I decided to go with a black and red design to contrast (and in turn compliment) the yellow fabric I had already chosen to cover my book. After drying and trimming we put this to one side and began work on our covers.

My book has two hard covers and a soft spine due to the personal preference of Riikka however a hard spine design would have been exactly the same. We measured out our books in completion before cutting the front and back sections (I was complimented on my accurate measuring/cutting! I’m usually not so great with this) and then worked on gluing the boards to the fabric to create the casing. As you would expect we then attached the casing to the book and left in the press to dry.

I found the whole experience very fulfilling and it has inspired me to realise the full scope of what my degree could potentially offer me. If I wanted to, I now have the skills to make a basic book completely by hand for a project and that is a specialist skill. It has reminded me that I am a crafty person and that with a little dedication (and a little know-how) things can pay off. Hopefully I’ll get into the habit of making things like this so that I can practice and hone the skills but until then I am very happy with my first attempt. Would framing it defeat the object?!

Went out for a little wander with Bethan today to spur some creativity as well as use my new reflector. Didn’t really plan anything, just had some fun shooting images of a friend. Hopefully we’ll organise something a little more creative next time!

Last Sunday I photographed for the JL Dance & Swing Band at one of their showcase evenings where family, friends and members of the public are invited to listen to the band and dance along if they are so inclined! It was a really great evening and despite it being my first contact with show lighting it was thoroughly enjoyable. I took a heap of images but here are a few just to wet your appetite. Other images can be seen on the band’s website and will in the future be posted to my own new online portfolio.

This summer will be all about the personal projects!

I am becoming more and more interested in the concept of appropriation & have just come across this project by Willem Peoplier, go check it out.

Creative and quick self-portraits.

Very interesting quick video on a challenge to set-up, shoot and edit a self-portrait (in front of a full auditorium) I really liked all three of the final images from the participants David Hobby, Martin Prihoda, and Gregory Heisler and it shows how creative photography allows you to be. Simple ideas work just as well as complex ones, a reassuring fact for a student like myself!
